Today book release “Archives 2020” by Virtueel Platform about digital archives

By Wietske van den Heuvel

The book Archive2020 – Sustainable Archiving of Born-Digital Cultural Content discusses the many issues that arise when digital content is being archived. Although a lot of material currently is being digitised, other digital material threatens to disappear from the public domain. This is due to software and hardware developments, migration issues and the rise of fast Internet connections. Together with experts from the field of digital archiving, the Virtueel Platform conducted a research on the sustainability of digital archives, content and culture. The book can be downloaded as a pdf or ordered for free, both on the website of Virtueel Platform.

Europeana Publishes First White Paper: Knowledge = Information In Context

Europeana press release

Europeana is proud to announce its first White Paper: a look at the key role linked data will play in Europeana’s development and in helping Europe’s citizens make connections between existing knowledge to achieve new cultural and scientific advances.

Linked data gives machines the ability to make associations and put search terms into context. Without it, Europeana could be seen as a simple collection of digital objects. With linked data, the potential is far greater, as the author of the white paper, Prof. Stefan Gradmann, explains.

He uses an example from the experimental Thought Lab to show how a search for ‘Paris’ intuitively leads to connected concepts like items in the Louvre, a Paris-based institution. It also gives the option to see paintings portraying people named Paris, such as the Greek prince, who abducted of Helen of Troy. From there, more links point the way to topics like the ‘myth of Paris’ or the mythical Apple of Discord – a golden apple that sparked a dispute and eventually led to the Trojan War – and then on to the forbidden apple eaten by Adam and Eve.

This is just one example of how linked data will allow Europeana to propose connections between millions of items from Europe’s heritage. These connections can then be used to generate new ideas and knowledge, on a scale not possible before.

“Strange as it may seem, this is the way lots of original artwork is conceived: through mental operations based on shifts of meaning, connotation and personal association,” says Prof. Gradmann, an expert in semantic technology, a professor for Library and Information Science at Humboldt University in Berlin and someone heavily involved in the building of Europeana.

Prof. Gradmann places this advanced search technology at the heart of Europeana’s purpose.

“One of Europeana’s main roles should be to help Europe’s citizens create a new era of knowledge from our shared culture and history.”

The publication of the White Paper follows the recent release of another key document from Europeana, the Public Domain Charter. The Charter emphasises the importance of preserving and keeping the Public Domain accessible to those who own it: the public.

Archivists and Academics Coming Together at 1st FIAT/IFTA Television Studies Seminar

By Berber Hagedoorn & Dana Mustata

On May 14th, l’Institut National de l’Audiovisuel (INA) in Paris hosted the 1st FIAT/IFTA Television Studies Seminar. Participants came from a wide range of countries: India, Greece, Romania, The Netherlands, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Great Britain and France. PhD students, professors and archivists presented their research results. The papers presented findings resulting from studies in television archives and were illustrated by archival material from their holdings. Presentations were structured around four main panels: “Television and memory”, “Early TV, going from black & white to colours”, “News broadcast & current affairs: comparative approaches” and “Television and cinema”. The event promoted academic research in FIAT/IFTA member archives, which provided excerpts for illustration during the presentations. Liselotte Doeswijk (University of Amsterdam) was selected to present her paper on “Colour and Graphic Design for Television” at the upcoming FIAT 2010 Conference in Dublin.

Members from the EUscreen consortium were predominantly present at the event. Alexander Hecht (ORF), Claude Mussou (INA) and Andy O’Dwyer (BBC) were part of the organizing FIAT/IFTA Television Studies Commission. From the EUscreen partner Utrecht University, Berber Hagedoorn presented on “Television as a Practice of Memory: the Case of Herinnert U Zich Deze Nog?” based on archival materials from the Dutch Institute for Sound and Vision. Dana Mustata, also from Utrecht University, presented on “Televising European Events: from Cold War Borders to EU Borders” providing archival materials from the Romanian Multimedia Archives and Video Active. Members of the European Television History Network also participated.
